I have been in pain management for about 22 years. During that time, I have been using prescribed opoids with mixed effectiveness. Obviously, there has been a severe opoid crisis that has taken thousands of lives every year. I am at the limit of what can be prescribed to me, yet with age, my pain has only persisted and increased, leaving me without other options. The result is that I have spent most days being bed-bound, unable to do even the simplest of tasks. Alongside this, cannabis has been iincreasingly legalized— including for recreational use, also with little to no benefit.
A few months ago, after doing research and consulting my doctor, I decided to try kratom. The results were truly life-changing for me. I can now actually spend time with my children, can clean my house, go shopping, travel a bit… It restored hope for me, where I had lost hope after so many years. It’s not a magic bullet, but it is the ONLY thing that has helped, outside of the opoids. There have been no adverse side-effects, and kratom has even helped with my chronic fatigue.
Used responsibly, kratom is a tool that provides a safer alternative to opoids, and does not cause a “high” or drowsiness that can impair my functioning. It also has other health benefits such as antioxidants, etc.
Why can cannabis be legalized, but kratom be possibly banned? It is certainly no more dangerous. Why take a beneficial, safer option away from those who need it? Especially when so many perish daily, from prescription opoids?
I firmly believe kratom can keep pain sufferers from turning to more dangerous substances, out of sheer desperation, including helping wean off these dangerous prescriptions or substances. For these reasons, and because of the benefit I have experienced, I would ask that you seriously reconsider any kratom ban. I want to be a participant in life, and a productive person. If you ban kratom, it will only relegate me back to living my life in bed, and nothing could be a more devastating result for me.
Thank you for your consideration.
